We are a retired couple from Nova Scotia, Canada. We have been coming to Devon for the winters off and on for almost 30 years. We have always rented from big agencies but we have friends that go to the Lake District and they rent locally. With large companies we have to return the car (to Heathrow to avoid drop-off charges) every 28/30 days and re-rent. Also my husband is 76. We do NOT need a new car. We would like to rent from January 2nd to April 1st. Is this possible and at what cost and what conditions?

There are no longer any rental car companies based at Oxenholme railway station. It is a very small but popular station serving the Lake District. To locate the nearest rental car location it is best to search on a laptop/PC/tablet rather than a mobile device. Enter “Oxenholme” and choose "Oxenholme Kendal” together with your dates and times and press search. At STEP2 you will see an interactive map, which you can zoom in and out and drag left and right. Icons will appear when there is availability nearby. If you are travelling by rail North to Oxenholme, you can leave the train at Lancaster (for example) and collect your rental car there. Lancaster is 20 miles away (30 minutes) to Oxenholme on the motorway. Alternatively KENDAL which is 2 miles north of Oxenholme sometimes has cars.

And do you rent to people who are 76? Is there an additional for age 76? We want a car for 90 days but to get the best rate we should do it in shorter periods, right?

90 days would probably be the maximum again the website will show you what discounts are applied. So you can try two months, one month, three months and possibly four. Try different periods. When cars are shown there is availability for the period you choose.
